In the same way, you wouldn’t wear a t-shirt and jeans to a black tie event; you wouldn’t want to wear your everyday clothes to space. Sure, you can go ahead and try, but some things are bound to go wrong. Spacesuits serve many different purposes while astronauts are in space.

At a cost of $12 million, space travel would not have been possible without the creation of the spacesuit. So, what else should you know about a spacesuit?

Technically, you can survive in space without a spacesuit; however, you won’t be able to survive for long. We’ll get to that in a minute. Astronauts primarily wear spacesuits as a form of protection. Space suits keep astronauts safe from the harsh environment of space and protect them from extreme heat or cold, in addition to providing them with oxygen to breathe. Let’s focus on the spacewalk. Any time an astronaut exits the vehicle while in space, it is called a spacewalk.

While astronauts face a wide range of temperatures that are not pleasant at all. In sunlight, temperatures can reach 250°F (120°C), while on the other end of the spectrum, conditions can be as cold as -250°F (-156°C). Anyway, this is just the beginning. Spacesuits provide astronauts with oxygen to breathe as they move through the vacuum of space. What’s more, spacesuits protect against the effects of space dust and bits of junk that travel at incredible speeds. Last but not least, spacesuits protect astronauts from high amounts of radiation in space.

You can survive in space without wearing a spacesuit

So, yes, it is possible to survive in space without a spacesuit, even for a short period of time. If you decide to make a daring jump into space without proper protection, you will not die immediately. However, we cannot say that you will last longer than 15 seconds. Your blood will not boil or freeze immediately, but rather you will swell and suffocate within 15 seconds. So bring your spacesuit with you.

Even the smallest space debris can travel at speeds of up to 16,780 mph (27,000 km/h), threatening the lives of astronauts in space. Spacesuits protect astronauts from small debris, space junk, and meteorites wandering through space.

Astronauts wear orange spacesuits called “launch and entry suits” when they leave Earth and return to Earth. However, these suits can only be worn inside the Space Shuttle.

You’ve probably always wondered what exactly happens when an astronaut needs to pee, well, today you get your answer. If you were on a spacewalk wearing a spacesuit and suddenly needed to urinate, you might do so. Bags attached to spacesuits are used to contain urine.

The Apollo space suits had shoes and looked great

Since the crew participating in the lunar mission needed to walk on the rough lunar surface, spacesuits with specialized shoes were created. What’s even more interesting is that these iconic shoes have been responsible for a host of trends in fashion and design, with some brands going so far as to repurpose the shoe for streetwear.

Spacesuits are not only worn in the vacuum of space, they are also worn while astronauts are inside the spacecraft during launch, re-entry, landing, and connection to a space station. Nobody flies in a tracksuit. The purpose of flying in a spacesuit is to protect the astronaut in the event of a sudden loss of pressure.

The first spacesuits for NASA were made for the Mercury program the first human spaceflight program in the United States. The program put the first American astronauts in space for suborbital flights. Mercury suits were only worn inside the spacecraft.

The first spacesuit was the Soviet SK-1

However, the first spacesuit ever worn by humans was the Russian SK-1 spacesuit. Worn by Yuri Gagarin in 1961 during the first human spaceflight.

Spacesuits evolved from flight suits

Before the official introduction of the spacesuit, fighter pilots and test pilots used flight suits for flights at very high altitudes. In fact, flight suit pioneers in the 1930s led to the development of spacesuits that were used in the 1960s.

The future of space travel will change the way spacesuits look

Spacesuits evolved over the decade to become more advanced and elegant. Private organizations alongside NASA are developing new spacesuits that will be part of the future of space travel. In one example, NASA is currently funding radical new ideas for wearable spacesuits on Mars and beyond. Led by NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts Program and a team from Texas A&M Engineering, SmartSuit is unlike anything we’ve seen before. The smart suit will be able to augment human performance and will feature a self-healing rubber skin. This smart outer membrane can provide visual feedback to the wearer, identifying potential damages, threats, or issues with the suit. What’s even more impressive is that this EVA spacesuit is designed to be extremely comfortable. Amazing futuristic space technology, isn’t it?

One of the most radical designs in the world of Spacesuits came from Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The sleek, futuristic smart suit is a cool, white, one-piece design capable of communicating directly with a computer on a spacecraft. Future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond will continue to shape the technology used in spacesuits.

One thing is for sure, future space stations are going to look crazy.
